Names in the News: Thomas Edward Lawrence


A british archeologist, geographrafer, and military officer Thomas Edward, of T. E., Lawrence played an important role in the Arab revolt against the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Contributing greatly to the guerrilla warfare waged against the Ottomans, an ally of Germany, Lawrence became greatly endeared to the Arab rebels. So committed to this cause Lawrence suffered multiple wounds from gunshots and shrapnel, earned while fighting alongside the rebels. This fierce dedication led Lawrence and his forced to carry out an incredibly successful campaign, ultimately winning Syria for the Allies, a large step towards toppling the Ottoman Empire. Because of his prominent involvement in this campaign and his dedication to the Arab people, Lawrence earned the nickname "Lawrence of Arabia", and inspired a motion picture of the same name.
